In neglecting the National Archives, the Morrison government turns its back on the future

Why didn’t the federal government increase funding for the National Archives of Australia in its recent budget?
We know it wasn’t because of budget discipline. Money was splashed around on all sorts of worthy causes. And the emergency funding to save film and magnetic tape recordings from disintegration was modest: A$67 million over seven years.
Nor was it because a scorn for history is in the Liberal Party’s DNA. The party’s founder, Robert Menzies, was a history buff. His library, which is the centrepiece of the newly established Robert Menzies Institute at the University of Melbourne, is full of books of history and biography. ....

'Inhumane' travel exemption criteria puts rich and famous ahead of vulnerable Australians, Greens say

Commissioner Outram insisted the department had facilitated children to be with their families.
As the commissioner said, there are a number of scenarios and if it s an Australian citizen child we have facilitated for them to return,  Assistant Secretary for temporary visas and border measures Sandra Jeffery stated.
If it s a temporary visa holder child and their parents are in Australia . their parents can go offshore.
If the child resided in Australia before the restriction took place, we would take that into account for the child to return, I don t think we have any of those scenarios in play though, as we have facilitated that. ....

Crikey Worm: Rite of reply

REPRESENTATIVE OF HOUSES
Anthony Albanese has pledged $10 billion in his budget reply speech for a housing future fund aimed at delivering 20,000 social housing properties across its first five years, with the ABC explaining about 10,000 houses would be set aside for frontline workers and another 4000 for women and families escaping domestic violence.
Returns from the fund would go towards maintaining homes in remote Indigenous communities, crisis accommodation, and specialist services for veterans experiencing homelessness.
Albanese further pledged $100 million over four years for cash payments to 10,000 apprentices working in “new energy” areas such as rooftop solar, energy efficiency upgrades and green hydrogen, and to criminalise wage theft, arguing the Coalition had behaved “like an eight-year-old child” who “threw a tantrum” by dumping wage theft provisions in its industrial relations package earlier this year. ....

Close to 3000 pro-life protestors turned out for the March For Life walk in Brisbane s CBD on Saturday afternoon.
Crowds gathered at Parliament House for the anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia rally.
Among the guest speakers was Senator Amanda Stoker, Federal Assistant Minister for Women, who said she was done with being labelled anti-women for her stances.
It takes courage and integrity to be here despite those who actively demonise you for your love and respect for the worth of every human being, she said.
