PITTMAN'S BILLS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS PASS AT COMMITTEE LEVEL

Two bills from Senator Joe Pittman were approved by the Senate Consumer Protection and Licensure Committee on Tuesday. The bills are designed to help physician assistants in the state.
Senate Bills 397 and 398 amend the Osteopathic Medical Practice Act and the Medical Practice Act of 1985 to modernize the practice of physician assistants. Senator Pittman called Pennsylvania one of the premier states for Physician Assistant education, but current legislation makes it less appealing for those students to stay after they earn their degree. The changes proposed will allow more physician assistants to practice in the state. Pittman said that physican assistants are very important, especially in rural communities. ....

SENATE PASSES PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

The State Senate yesterday approved a proposed constitutional amendment to limit the emergency disaster declaration powers of a governor. Senate Bill 2 now goes before the House of Representatives, and if approved there, could be placed on the ballot for the voters to approve or deny in the Spring Primary.
Current state law permits the governor to declare an emergency disaster for ninety days, with no limit on extending it at his or her discretion. The amendment would limit the disaster declaration to 21 days unless the General Assembly approves an extension. In November, Governor Tom Wolf extended the current emergency disaster declaration for a third time, through the end of February. ....

With the 60-day public comment period underway regarding Governor Tom Wolf’s executive order for Pennsylvania to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI, state leaders are wasting no time in voicing their concerns over this matter.
One is Senator Joe Pittman, as he presented to the Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Quality Board (EQB) with his main focus being the damaging effects RGGI poses on area jobs and school districts. In his testimony, Pittman called the initiative “counterintuitive” and said that while carbon must be emitted to produce revenue, the proposed tax will make the power plant marketplace uncompetitive, resulting in the potential loss of thousands of jobs – especially in the Armstrong and Indiana counties. ....
