Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced Thursday that a bill allowing public input on CEMEX’s controversial Santa Clarita mine has passed unanimously through the state senate. Senate Bill 520 (SB 520), coauthored by Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, R-Santa Clarita, would allow public input on projects approved more than 30 years before being constructed, including the planned CEMEX Mega-Mine in Santa Clarita. “The proposed CEMEX Mega Mine at Soledad Canyon Road and the 14 Freeway would be the second largest aggregate mine in America,” stated Wilk. “The project didn’t make sense in 1991, and less so today. The people ought to have a right to petition their government and SB 520 would achieve this.” ....
Scott Wilk’s ‘Lifeline For Foster Youth Bill’ Clears Senate Committee Senator Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) announced that his senate bill aimed towards aiding foster youth was recently passed by the Senate Human Services Committee with unanimous support. The bill (SB 546) would provide “LifeLine” phones to foster youth between the ages of 13 and 26, extending the California Public Utilities Commission’s “iFoster Pilot Program,” which provides foster youth with smartphones, text and data. “The Senate Human Services Committee agreed that now is not the time for the State to take phones away from foster youth,” said Wilk. “Cell phone ownership is oftentimes a lifeline for foster youth during normal times, and the events of last year underscored how important it is to continue the availability of these resources.” ....
