Ottawa police launch new unsolved homicides task force


 
OTTAWA
The Ottawa Police Service is making a fresh push toward solving open homicide cases, launching an ‘Unsolved Homicide Task Force.
“We will never forget the victims of homicides and all of these cases remain active. We have been meeting with and working with the families and loved ones of the victims to offer them support and ensure these crimes are solved,” Chief Peter Sloly said in a news release Monday announcing the task force.
“This new Task Force is the next step in our mission to solve these homicides, support the victim’s families, hold the perpetrators accountable and improve the safety of all affected communities.” ....

Ottawa surpasses 20,000 total COVID-19 cases since start of pandemic


 
OTTAWA
Ottawa Public Health is reporting 348 more people in the city have tested positive for COVID-19 and one more person has died.
This is the third day in a row that health officials have reported more than 300 cases per day in the city. Ottawa Public Health added 370 new cases on Sunday and 325 on Saturday, both of which were daily records.
The new figures from OPH put the city s total pandemic case count at 20,073. Ottawa surpassed 19,000 cases on April 9. 
476 residents of Ottawa have died from COVID-19.
The province added 4,401 new cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, along with 15 additional deaths from the disease and 2,445 newly resolved cases. ....

Senators Move to Make Nonprofit Donor Names Private

    A new bill supported by influential N.C. senators would protect the confidentiality of donors to nonprofit organizations and charities.
    Senate Bill 636 would prevent the disclosure of the names of people giving money or property to nonprofit corporations, making their identities confidential. The bill would also prohibit legislators and government workers from disclosing confidential information they come across in the course of their work.
    Primary sponsors of the bill are Sens. Joyce Krawiec, R-Forsyth, Norm Sanderson, R-Craven, and Bob Steinburg, R-Chowan. Democratic Sen. Dan Blue, D-Wake, is a co-sponsor. ....
