More than 30 people have died in the Indian city of Mumbai after an intense burst of rainfall caused a landslide and wall collapse, as changing monsoon patterns due to climate change lead to more extreme rains across India.
Heavy rainfall, described by meteorologists as “monstrous”, hammered down on India’s financial capital over the weekend causing mass devastation. In the eastern suburb of Chembur, the collapse of a wall in the night led to a landslide that enveloped homes as people were sleeping and killed at least 21, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). ....

Fifteen people died in house collapses triggered by landslides as incessant overnight rains pounded Mumbai and nearby areas, with the city witnessing severe waterlogging, and disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic. Twelve people died as a compound wall came crashing down on some houses after a landslide at Bharatnagar Vashi Naka locality in Mumbai s Mahul area, a fire official said.
The retaining wall collapsed at 1 am, he said. Two people were injured and taken to nearby Rajawadi hospital from where they have been discharged after preliminary treatment, he added.
Three hutment dwellers were killed as five shanties collapsed after a landslide following incessant overnight rains in Mumbai s Vikhroli suburb at 2.30 am, a civic official said. Two persons were injured and were sent to a nearby hospital, he added. ....

As many as 11 people were killed after a wall collapsed on some shanties in Chembur s Bharat Nagar area in Mumbai due to a landslide, said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Sunday.
As per Mumbai s fire brigade team that also reached the incident site, 16 persons were rescued from the debris of the wall collapse in Chembur.
Rescue operations for the people trapped are underway, said NDRF.
Following incessant rains in Maharashtra s Mumbai, several parts of the city reported waterlogging on Sunday.
The rainwater even entered houses located in Hanuman Nagar, Kandivali East area of Mumbai.
Sion railway track in Mumbai was also waterlogged after continuous heavy rainfall. ....
