December 30, 2020 A new report prepared by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) warns that the number of Venezuelan refugees and migrants could rise to 7 million in 2021 if the countries of the region reopen their borders and the regime in Venezuela remains in place.
The Situation Report, prepared by the Office of the OAS General Secretariat for this crisis, headed by David Smolansky, presents a balance of the year 2020 for Venezuelan refugees and migrants. Among the report s findings, it highlights that: ....

The Hague: 'Reasonable Basis' for Maduro Crimes Against Humanity Case

The official office of the top prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced this week that it had found “a reasonable basis to believe” socialist Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro had committed crimes against humanity.
The declaration, which opens the door to prosecuting Maduro at the world’s top court for violent political crime, received near-universal praise from members of the Venezuelan opposition and the human rights community.
The ICC only has the power to act regarding acts in nations that are signatories to the Rome Statute, which created the venue. As Venezuela is a signatory, the prosecutor found the court did have jurisdiction to prosecute Maduro unlike its conclusion regarding a complaint to the ICC against China for building over 1,000 concentration camps for ethnic minorities, which noted China is not a party to the Rome Statute. ....

14 Venezuelans Drown Trying to Escape Socialism on Raft

At least 14 Venezuelans drowned this weekend attempting to escape the socialist country on a raft off the eastern state of Sucre, local authorities confirmed Monday.
Venezuelan coast guards found 11 people dead Saturday around seven miles off the coast. Three others washed up on the beach Sunday. Their bodies were later transferred to the morgue of the Central Hospital of Cumaná in the state capital of Sucre.
The victims are believed to have been trying to reach Trinidad and Tobago, presumably as an escape from the economic and humanitarian crisis in their homeland. In a statement confirming the tragic events, the Venezuelan regime attempted to shift the blame onto criminal gangs. ....
