Teacher exodus fears as number quitting register soars

The number of teachers quitting the GTCS register rose by nearly 25 per cent between 2019 and last year.
The number of teachers quitting the professional register has surged by nearly one-quarter to reach a five-year high, fuelling fears of an exodus driven by the widespread use of temporary contracts.
Figures from the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) show 4,302 individuals allowed their registration to lapse in 2020. This is up from 3,448 in 2019 and 3,027 the year before.
Release of the statistics, which were obtained by The Herald under Freedom of Information legislation, follows disruption to education in the wake of Covid-19 and comes amid reports that many qualified individuals face a prolonged struggle to secure permanent work. ....

Protests in Khartoum, Sudan, as government and International Monetary Fund step up attacks
Mass protests took place in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on June 30, against high inflation and the removal of fuel subsidies, which are increasing food prices and causing further cuts in living standards. Inflation hit 341 percent in March. Fuel will increase from around 35 cents to nearly 70 cents per litre, and the price of diesel will more than double.
On June 29, the International Monetary Fund approved a $2.5bn loan, with strings attached.
Demonstrators outside the presidential palace shouted, “We want the fall of the regime,” and “Bread for the poor.” Police used tear gas against crowds who burned tyres in the streets. ....
