Even by the standards of Northern Ireland’s Troubles it was a tumultuous, violent couple of days.
The British army swept into nationalist neighbourhoods across the region on the morning of 9 August 1971 in Operation Demetrius, rounding up hundreds of suspects without trial in hope of snuffing out the IRA’s campaign.
The army intelligence was poor – they scooped up many innocent people – and they ignored loyalist paramilitaries. Some neighbourhoods responded with barricades, petrol bombs and gunfire.
Hundreds of homes were destroyed and thousands fled across the border to refugee camps set up by the Irish army. ....

Ballymurphy massacre inquest: Coroner's findings on victims' deaths

Joseph Murphy who was shot dead in the Ballymurphy Massacre in 1971
“The evidence establishes that the deceased were unarmed and posing no threat. They were innocent people,” said Mrs Justice Keegan.
Each of the deceased were shot by the British army who were stationed in the nearby Henry Taggart Hall.
Mrs Justice Keegan said it was “very unfortunate” she had not heard accounts from soldiers involved on the day and that no one explained the military response which led to the four deaths.
She said she was satisfied there was some IRA activity in the area at the time, but she did not believe there were a large number of IRA men, but there was some evidence that shots were fired at the army. ....

Nelson McCausland: 50th anniversary of internment is nothing worth celebrating

Sinn Fein, as well as the SDLP, do not want to commemorate the centenary of Northern Ireland. Instead, in 2021 Sinn Fein will probably look back 50 years to commemorate the introduction of internment in 1971 and, indeed, 1971 was a particularly important year in Ulster.
After the emergence of the Provisional IRA in December 1969, they spent much of 1970 on consolidation. That year, 29 people were killed and 19 of the deaths were the result of actions by republicans.
The consolidation of 1970 paved the way for the escalation of 1971. During that year, 180 people were killed and, of that number, republicans were responsible for 107.
Republican apologists often suggest that the escalation was a reaction to internment, known as Operation Demetrius, but that is said in an effort to conceal the cynical reality of the IRA strategy. ....
