Olawale Ajimotokan
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has saluted former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, and the Chairman/Editor-in-Chief, THISDAY /ARISE Media Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, for giving journalism and the media a place of honour.
In a birthday message to the two eminent journalists, the guild, in a statement by its President, Mr. Mustapha Isah, and the General Secretary, Mr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, said the duo had brought a creative innovation to modern journalism practice through their labours and accomplishments.
Describing Obaigbena, fondly called the Duke by his close associates, as possessing resilient character, tact and a tenacious strength of mind to succeed, the guild said he had been able to navigate the rough pathway in the past four decades to make his mark in the industry. ....

NIGERIANS MUST RESIST INCREASING ASSAULT ON PRESS FREEDOM

The plan to muzzle the press is wrong and counterproductive
At a period when Nigerians are seeking ways to salvage their country from its present travails, the wilful courting of dictatorship cannot be a route to national salvation and healing. That unfortunately seems to be the preferred destination choice for the current administration. From inserting controversial clauses in the electoral bill to circumscribe transparent elections to a desperate plot to plant a partisan presidential attack dog in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is obvious that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has scant regards for democratic ethos. However, the real concern is the crude attempt to tamper with fundamental freedoms, going by proposed bills to regulate the print and electronic media via a dubious press code and licensing regime that would register or delist journalists based on the whims of some politicians. ....

Osoba Mourns Jakande, Says Iroko Tree Has Fallen

A former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba has mourned first civilian governor of Lagos state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, who passed away on Thursday.
In a statement he signed on Thursday, Osoba likened Jakande’s passage to the fall of “an Iroko tree as well as an elephant,” saying he left giant footprints behind.
Jakande, who also served as a former Minister of Works under the military junta of late General Sani Abacha, died on Thursday at the age of 91.
Citing his remarkable achievements in journalism and government, Osoba said Jakande “will be remembered in history as a personification of the best in journalism and as a political colossus.” ....
