Student paramedics are trapped in a “deteriorating mental health crisis”, with one in 10 having considered suicide due to a lack of money, a survey has indicated.
More than two-thirds thought they did not have enough money to finish the course, and more than eight in 10 were “worried they are going to burn out”.
The findings came to light after the Pay Student Paramedics campaign group sent the survey to all paramedic science students across all five universities in Scotland which offer the course in March, receiving 200 responses. ....

Crisis looms among student paramedics over cash worries

CAMPAIGNERS have warned of a looming crisis among student paramedics in Scotland, with new research revealing that one in 10 have considered suicide due to their precarious financial position.
The study carried out by the Pay Student Paramedics campaign shows overwhelming pressure on those training in the field, with more than half reporting that they have considered dropping out due to money worries.
The campaign, made up of students at five training universities in Scotland, was set up last year to secure a bursary for student paramedics equal to that received by nurses and midwives.
It has been backed by a number of unions and all of Scotland’s political parties, with the campaign now pushing for the bursary to be put in place by this September. ....
