SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) - A major move is underway to get to the bottom what happened and why last Thursday at Selma High School. That’s when two juveniles got into a physical fight, a scuffle that ultimately led to one of the teens allegedly firing a round from his small-caliber weapon.

Some students to return to the classroom


SELMA — When Fresno County moves into the red tier and Selma Unified School District secondary students can go back into the classroom,  less than half of the students will return to class. Those that choose to will remain on distance learning.
 
 
When the numbers are right, trustees gave interim superintendent Dr. Marilyn Shepherd authorization to set the date to return to the classroom.
The earliest the secondary classes could open is March 22. The following week is spring break.

Raisin Capital of the World: From the 'Home of the Peach' to the 'Raisin Capital'


In 1893, George B. Otis opened up a packinghouse on the south end of Selma where peaches were dried.  In 1911, Libby, McNeill and Libby established a cannery, which helped the self-proclaimed status of “Home of the Peach.”  Further consideration was the fact that the Peak Peach was the major varietal advancement of the peach by John H. Peak when in 1913 he planted an orchard of Phillip peach trees on his Bethel property.
A native of Delaware County, N.Y. he had been a Selman since 1890 when he arrived with his wife, baby and $51. In 1916, when Peak was inspecting his first peach crop, he discovered that peaches on one tree were bigger and ripened faster than the other trees.  Samples of the fruit was sent to horticulturalist Luther Burbank who confirmed the significant discovery of a new variety.  Millions of the new Peak Peach were planted in California.  The California Association of Nurserymen with its first merit award honored John H. Peak in 1937. ....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) An Alabama lawmaker is recovering at home following his release from a hospital where he was taken after being carried off the House floor on a stretcher.
State Rep. Will Dismukes, a Republican from Prattville, was transported to a hospital Thursday after experiencing shortness of breath and chest pains.
“I feel great,” he told The Montgomery Advertiser in a phone interview on the trip back to Prattville on Friday. “I had a case of AFib (atrial fibrillation) that they were able to address and handle with no major or permanent damage. I still have some tests to take in the next week or so. I’m going to do what my cardiologist tells me to do and plan to be back when the session returns on Tuesday.” ....
