Israel's voting system needs urgent reform


The Central Elections Committee (CEC) sets out how Israel’s electoral system works:
“Israel has an electoral system based on nation-wide proportional representation. In other words, the number of seats that each list receives in the Knesset - the House of Representatives - is proportional to the number of votes it received…
the only limitation placed on a list which participated in the elections that can keep it from being elected is that it must pass the qualifying threshold, which is currently 3.25%.”
The CEC explains the historical background for this unique voting system:

On the 20th January, 2021, the Supreme Court sets out the following issues for trial for the 7th December 2020 Presidential petition. The primary purpose is to set issues that will be on trial and to set the parameters that will inform the ruling of the Justices.
The Issues for Trial
1. Whether or not the petition discloses any reasonable cause of action
2. Whether or not based on data contained in the declaration of 1st Respondent, for the 2nd Respondent as President-elect no candidate obtained more than 50% of the valid votes cast as required by Article 63(3) of the 1992 Constitution. ....

Jean Mensah refutes claims of padding votes in favour of Akufo-Addo


“A tabulation of all Valid Votes obtained by all 12 Candidates as declared by the [EC] on 9th December 2020 and captured on Form 13 adds up to a total of 13,121,111,” she captured in the statement.
Mrs Mensah’s position comes after, the petitioner of the 2020 election, Mr Mahama argued that neither he nor President Akufo-Addo attained a clear majority during the 2020 polls because of the omission of the Techiman South constituency from the declaration.
He is, hence asking the Supreme Court to order a re-run of the presidential election for him and the incumbent.
But the Returning Officer of the 2020 Presidential election insisted that President Akufo-Addo obtained more than the 50% of the valid votes cast, which is required to win Presidential elections in Ghana. ....
