The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa through the European Union-funded Spotlight Initiative is partnering with Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to undertake community-based interventions to address the unequal gender power relations and the socio-cultural, religious, economic and political root causes of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and harmful practices (HPs), which negatively affect women and girls with disabilities.
Through this partnership, Deaf Women Included (DWI), Disabled Women Support Organization (DWSO), and National Association of Societies for the Care of the Handicapped (NASCOH) will conduct capacity-strengthening and social dialogue initiatives that target community leaders, chiefs, local authorities, social workers, police and other service providers on SGBV, HPs and sexual and reproductive heal ....

COVID-19: Disabled in Zimbabwe cry for attention

Even as landlocked southern African country Zimbabwe has begun vaccinating people against the COVID-19, there seems no hope for the disabled population to be attended to anytime soon.
According to an assessment published by the UNESCO Regional Office, the persons with disabilities were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 which also resulted in anxiety and an increase in gender-based violence.
Last month, Zimbabwe received 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine donated from China.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Mevion Chawota, 29, whose both hands and legs are not working said his community will remain at the periphery, even during the vaccination drive. He complained that nobody came to their rescue during the lockdown. ....
