A cross-section of people in Zimbabwe say that rising levels of poverty, lack of freedom, and human rights issues have cast a shadow on the 41st Independence Day celebrations being observed on Saturday.
Zimbabwe gained its independence from British colonial rule on April 18, 1980, ending 90 years of settler rule.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Nkululeko Maseko, 73, a former police officer under the Rhodesian government now living in capital Harare’s Highfields low-income suburb, said his incomes have continued to fall over the years.
“I wish if I could turn back the hands of time,” he said. ....

Even as landlocked southern African country Zimbabwe has begun vaccinating people against the COVID-19, there seems no hope for the disabled population to be attended to anytime soon.
According to an assessment published by the UNESCO Regional Office, the persons with disabilities were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 which also resulted in anxiety and an increase in gender-based violence.
Last month, Zimbabwe received 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine donated from China.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Mevion Chawota, 29, whose both hands and legs are not working said his community will remain at the periphery, even during the vaccination drive. He complained that nobody came to their rescue during the lockdown. ....

It never rains, but pours for Zimbabwe’s governing politicians who are falling prey to COVID-19 one after another. Leaders across parts of Southern Africa are struggling against the pandemic as the deadly virus keeps claiming the lives of political elites.
In July last year, Perence Shiri, Zimbabwe’s agriculture minister, died of COVID-19.
On Jan. 15, Ellen Gwaradzimba, Zimbabwe’s minister for provincial affairs for Manicaland Province, succumbed to coronavirus and was followed in the same week by Morton Malianga, the country’s deputy finance minister in the 1980s. ....
