Baltimore City students want leaders to improve school reopening plan

They made their concerns heard Wednesday outside of school headquarters in east Baltimore.
While many students are set to return to the classrooms in March, some of them came together to say that the district isn t ready.
This will increase the exposure to COVID-19 to students, teachers and families in Baltimore. We must act now,” Baltimore City College student Eamon Lesko said.
City school headquarters was the site of a student strike, where demands to delay reopening classrooms for in-person learning were made to school officials.
For these reasons, and the demands from our teachers such as vaccines, ventilation upgrades and others, we ask for students to do virtual learning from home like we ve been doing since March,” student Blanca Rosalez said. ....

At the start of the pandemic, Jollene Levid and her mother, Nora, found themselves glued to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s nightly press conferences. In a press conference late last March, Garcetti announced a new milestone: the first health-care worker in Los Angeles County to die of the disease.
“When I heard him say that, I realized that he was talking about Auntie Rosary,” Jollene Levid says, speaking about Rosary Castro-Olega, a 63-year-old nurse who came out of retirement to work in hospitals strained by the pandemic. Castro-Olega’s death helped inspire an online memorial called Kanlungan, which honors the lives of health-care workers of Filipino descent. ....

Several statewide nurses unions and Pennsylvania legislators unveiled a series of safe-staffing measures during a virtual press conference Tuesday morning. House Bill 106 and Senate Bill 240, collectively known as the Patient Safety Act, seek to set standards in nurse protections.
“As all of America knows, nurses have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. And today we are here to say that Pennsylvania needs safe staffing to protect nurses, and in turn protect our patients,” said Tarik Khan, president of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association.
PSNA is throwing its support behind these bills, as are Nurses of PA (NOPA), the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP), and Service Employees International Union Healthcare Pennsylvania (SEIU Healthcare PA). ....

Massachusetts nurses vote to strike for safe staffing ratios

Massachusetts nurses vote to strike for safe staffing ratios
The nurses at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, have been working since November 2019 without a contract. On February 10, they gave their overwhelming approval for strike action for safer working conditions and patient outcomes, with 89 percent of 800 voting in favor.
When negotiations resumed on February 11, management left the table after five minutes. Since that time, the nurses have been left in limbo. There has been no indication that the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) is preparing to call a strike. The MNA would be contractually required to issue a 10-day strike notice to the hospital. ....
