Review: "The Femme Abstract" - Arts - The Austin Chronicle

In these clamped-down, stressed-out, resource-stripped days of pandemic, we ve come to scarcely expect art exhibitions at all, much less ones that present wide-ranging surveys showcasing dozens of artists.
And yet, here we are, greeting 2021 with just such a broad, extensive show. Two years after heroically assembling work by 50 women artists into a single exhibition, artist and curator Moya McIntyre has made that monumental effort again. The number of artists in the second edition of The Femme Abstract may be slighly smaller, but the show itself is no less engrossing than the Austin Critics Table Award-winning first. Here are pieces by more than 40 artists spread over two floors in a former office space in the redeveloped warehouse at 979 Springdale, and the varieties of style and medium are so expansive that every wall, every room, every nook and cranny offers a distinctive and fresh exp ....

'Femme Abstract' art show in East Austin: Where and when to see it


Trailblazing women have written the history of Austin art.
Start with sculptor Elisabet Ney, whose 19th-century studio in Hyde Park became the city’s first art gallery and today shines as a small museum dedicated to her life and works. Follow that with the ongoing work of her admirers among the members of early 20th-century advocacy groups, such as Austin Art League and Texas Fine Arts Association (an ancestor to the Contemporary Austin), populated almost entirely by women.
It is true that the postwar generation of artists and teachers who dominated the new fine arts program at the University of Texas were, for the most part, men. Yet they were followed by the visionary founders of Women & Their Work, which since 1977 has promoted the careers of hundreds of artists as part of a program that is recognized and admired across the country. ....
