One of Chesterfield County’s deadliest fires that took six lives, including four children, was caused by smoking in the bed of one of the victims, county fire officials said Monday.
The Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office, in conjunction with Chesterfield police investigators, have determined the fire’s cause to be related to cigarette smoking, which originated in the bed of 70-year-old Linda Carlton, fire officials said.
“We were able to determine the fire was in her bed where she was at the time,” Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Salvatore Luciano Jr. said in an interview. “We don’t know if she was physically smoking, whether it dropped, or whether she put it out in an ash tray [and ashes caught the bedding on fire].” ....

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. Smoking in bed was determined to be the cause of an April fire that killed six people, including four children, in Chesterfield County.
Linda Carlton, 70, is the sixth and final fire victim to be identified by Chesterfield Fire officials.
The Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office in conjunction with Chesterfield Police Detectives have determined the cause of the fire to be smoking-related which originated in the bed of Mrs. Carlton, Chesterfield Fire and EMS Lt. Kenny Mitchell wrote in an email. Nationally and locally, smoking-related incidents continue to be the highest cause of home fire deaths. ....

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - Chesterfield Fire Marshals have released the cause of a Chesterfield fire that killed six people, including four children, in April.
The Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office and local detectives determined the fire was smoking-related and originated in the bed of Linda Carlton, a 70-year-old woman who died in the fire.
Officials say the family’s home had working smoke alarms. ....
