TAMPA, Fla. - The construction of an elevated bridge over Gandy Boulevard has been going on for nearly three years. The West Extension of the Selmon Expressway is now complete and will open to drivers Monday, April 19.
It is the final piece of the Selmon Expressway, a 1.9-mile roadway high above Gandy Boulevard. The West Extension will separate commuters from locals and should alleviate the congestion and rush-hour backups.
You’re mixed in with a lot of travelers who have no destination here; it’s just the only route through this corridor to a destination somewhere else, explained Joe Waggoner, Executive Director for the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority. So what the expressway extension does here is it gives them a choice. ....

TAMPA, Fla. - The Gandy extension of the Selmon Expressway will be opening soon. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority says the elevated Selmon West Extension will open Monday, April 19.
The nearly two-mile toll lane connects the expressway directly to the Gandy Bridge. That means you can drive from Brandon to St. Pete without hitting a stoplight.
The new lanes have been under construction since 2018. They’re elevated 30 feet off the ground to alleviate concerns from local business owners who feared the span would block signage and visibility. ....

The day is FINALLY almost here! The upper expansion of the Selmon Expressway connecting Brandon to Pinellas is set to open April 19th!! The span has been under construction since 2018.
The Hillsborough Expressway Authority made the announcement yesterday that the toll extension will open to drivers on the afternoon of April 19th.
According to the
The extension offers drivers a choice of staying on Gandy Boulevard for local destinations or making use of the new toll lane for so-called regional “pass-through” trips. The cost to use the extension is 95 cents with SunPass or $1.31 with toll-by-plate billing.
