The new hyperv-next patches follow an RFC last September stating that the company wants to create a complete virtualization stack with Linux and Microsoft Hypervisor. In November Microsoft added a userspace interface for creating and running guest virtual machines while running on the Microsoft hypervisor that depends on root partition support.
