Navy sailor found guilty of indecently assaulting colleagues to appeal convictions

He and lawyer James Cairney would lodge the application to appeal on Friday, he said.
The court martial heard the offending took place while the sailors were on a tour of duty with HMNZS Te Kaha and Te Mana in Victoria, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, in August 2020.
The sailor was accused of grabbing one of his colleague’s breasts in the back of a taxi as the pair headed back to base after a group outing at a restaurant on August 2.
She battled with whether to report the incident, but ultimately filed a report to stop the sailor from doing “something worse” to someone else. ....

Navy sailor sentenced to two years of military detention for sexual assaults

Both women told the accused to stop, but he didn’t.
On Saturday, Judge Kevin Riordan sentenced the man to two years detention in the Services Correctional Establishment (SCE).
He was also dismissed from the Navy.

The court martial oversees cases where a breach of military discipline or other offences may have occurred.
Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral David Proctor, said the sailor had “caused significant harm to his victims and brought the Royal New Zealand Navy into disrepute”.
Earlier in the week, prosecutor Captain Grace Blanks said the case was about a “failure of comradeship” while the man was representing the New Zealand Defence Force. ....
