One of the most accomplished American Nordic skiers is retiring from the sport. Vermont native Sophie Caldwell Hamilton announced on Thursday via her Instagram account that she has decided to call it a career.
And what a decorated career it was.
The two-time Olympian and two-time World Cup event champion is simply ready to begin a new chapter in her life.
“I think even though there are so many things about it that I still love, I felt ready to be moving on to the next thing,” said Caldwell Hamilton during a phone interview from Germany, where the World Cup has been ongoing. “I also wanted to stop while I do still love the sport and while things are still going pretty well because I’d like those memories to stay positive.” ....

It was a rather cloudy day as the athletes circled Ulricehamn’s sprint loop again and again for Sunday’s freestyle team sprint, urged forward by the cheering of recorded crowds piped through a trailside loudspeakers. After first contesting a semi-final round earlier in the morning, the ten quickest teams moved onto the final, each athlete racing three laps for a total of 7.2 k (each loop being 1.6 k).  ....

Our Opinion: US women level up in cross-country skiing

In a winter when most Americans could use a good news story to lift their patriotic spirits, we find one unfolding — albeit 4,000 miles from here — in snow-covered places like Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Finland. That’s where the women’s U.S. Cross-Country Ski Team, led by the standout performances from its top racers Jessie Diggins and Rosie Brennan, is opening new ground in a sport long dominated by European nations.
Since the first Winter Games in 1924, the United States has just two Olympic medals in cross-country skiing: Brattleboro, Vt.’s Bill Koch won a silver in the 1976 Olympics, and 42 years later the women’s team eked out a gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. (For comparison, Norway has 121 Olympic medals in Nordic ski racing. Russian and Soviet skiers have 109. Sweden and Finland, 80 apiece. With its two medals, the U.S. is tied with Slovenia; only Bulgaria has fewer, one.) ....

There might be part of Hailey Swirbul that is finally beginning to believe she belongs. The 22-year-old cross-country skier is coming off quite a stretch with the U.S. ski team, one that includes her first career World Cup podium and a successful go in the notorious Tour de Ski.
Both are signs the Basalt High School graduate and former Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club athlete has taken that step up to the world’s elite.
“I’ve kind of proved to myself that I can do that,” Swirbul said of being able to hang with the sport’s top athletes. “The more time I spend in Europe on the World Cup and the more time I spend around those top girls the less intimidating it becomes for me. I think that’s a huge factor.” ....
