Michigan Man Sentenced to Prison for Attacking Black Teenager

Detroit, Michigan - The Justice Department announced that a Michigan man was sentenced Thursday for willfully causing bodily injury to a Black teenager because of the teenager’s race.
Lee Mouat, 43, pleaded guilty on March 4. He was sentenced to 60 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his hate crime.
According to documents filed in connection with this case, Mouat admitted that he confronted a group of Black teenagers, including the victim, at a state park in Monroe, Michigan. Mouat repeatedly used racial slurs and said that Black people had no right to use the public beach where the incident occurred. Mouat then struck one of the teens in the face with a bike lock, knocking out several of the victim’s teeth, lacerating his face and mouth, and fracturing his jaw. Mouat also attempted to strike another Black teenager with the bike lock. ....

Michigan Man Gets 5 Years for Attacking Black Teen With Bike Lock in Hate Crime

A Michigan man was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for attacking a Black teenager with a bike lock.
Lee Mouat, 43, of Newport, Michigan pleaded guilty on March 4 to willfully causing bodily injury to a Black teenager because of the teenager s race. Along with his five-year prison sentence, he also was given three years of supervised release.
The incident took place in Monroe, Michigan in June of 2020. Mouat approached a group of Black teenagers while at Sterling State Park. Mouat then began to use racial slurs toward the group of teenagers, stating that they had no right to be at the public beach section of the park. ....

4 former Minneapolis officers indicted on federal civil rights charges in Floyd's death


(The Center Square) – A federal grand jury has indicted four ex-Minneapolis police officers on federal civil rights charges related to the death of George Floyd.
The first indictment charges Derek Chauvin, 45; Tou Thao, 35; J. Alexander Kueng, 27; and Thomas Lane, 38. The three-count indictment alleges that all four defendants willfully deprived Floyd of his constitutional rights, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 242.
Count one of the indictment alleges that on May 25, 2020, Chauvin pressed his left knee on Floyd’s neck, and his right knee on Floyd’s back and arm, as Floyd lay on the ground, handcuffed and unresisting, and kept his knees on Floyd’s neck and body even after Mr. Floyd became unresponsive. ....
