UGA SGA executive tickets debate COVID-19, diversity and inclusion, mental health


As the University of Georgia’s Student Government Association continues to campaign, the executive tickets met for a virtual debate Wednesday night where they discussed COVID-19, diversity and inclusion and mental health. There are three tickets for the upcoming election — Belong, Bridge and Voice. The Georgia Political Review moderated the debate.
Platform for a pandemic
All three tickets had detailed opinions about the transition from mostly online classes to in-person as the distribution of campus vaccines widen, as well as the acclimation of freshman and transfer students during COVID-19.
The Bridge ticket, comprised of Jeremiah de Sesto, Hannah-Rose Basson and Oba Samaye, wants the colleges within UGA to have a uniform response to the transition to in-person classes. They also want EITS to provide chargers and technology for longer periods of time. ....

UGA students open up about best green space getaways on campus


In a time of social distancing and virtual learning, students are making less of an effort to venture outside. Instead, they are finding themselves attending online classes in their rooms, sometimes even from the comfort of their very own bed.
There are many outdoor alternatives for cramped bedroom study spaces all throughout the University of Georgia’s campus. From studying to relaxing and soaking up some vitamin D, there are many ways students can utilize UGA’s green space getaways.
Sophomore psychology major Joanna Elder’s favorite campus getaway is the Mary Kahrs Warnell Memorial Garden and Pond, also known as the Turtle Pond, located in South Campus near the Forestry Building. Upperclassmen showed Elder the pond while she was struggling to find a parking spot near her chemistry class. ....

'A weird era': UGA students share their feelings about upcoming spring semester | UGAnews


As the spring 2021 semester approaches, University of Georgia students are preparing for a fresh start. As the COVID-19 pandemic persists into the new year, students at UGA are both hopeful and conflicted with the first day of classes nearing on Jan. 13. 
Classes will be mixed between in-person, hybrid or completely online instruction. However, UGA will increase in-person instruction this semester. In a message from Provost S. Jack Hu, Vice President for Instruction Rahul Shrivastav and Vice Provost for Graduate Education Ron Walcott, data from the fall 2020 semester concluded that there was little evidence of transmission of COVID-19 in classrooms. 
There are 8,579 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Athens-Clarke County as of Jan. 4, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. Despite the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning U.S. citizens to stay home for the holidays and get tested, there has been a significant rise in cases across the nation. T ....
