East Street to re-open to traffic to ease congestion - but not quite yet

TRAFFIC is to be allowed to use East Street from later this month in a bid to address the severe traffic congestion suffered in Taunton over the past two weeks.
Somerset County Council s highways teams has decided to remove the temporary closure of the street, where vehicles have been banned since last summer to ease social distancing.
Essential works by the developer of a new residential block in the Paul Street area led to significant delays for motorists from Monday of last week.
A county council spokesperson said that measures taken by the developer and the highways teams on the ground had led to improved traffic flow this week, with delays on average now comparable to a normal busy day. ....

Burnham-On-Sea Library to re-open from Monday 8th March with limited service

The Library in Burnham’s Princess Street will operate with temporary reduced hours from 10am-1pm from Monday – Saturday.
Nathan Crook, Burnham-On-Sea Library Supervisor, says borrowers will be able to return library items, collect reservations that have been placed via the LibrariesWest website, and collect library choice orders (Order & Collect – pre-selected and issued by Library staff).
“Unfortunately at this time we are unable to allow borrowers into the building to browse the library shelves but this will be kept under review,” he adds. ....

Bid to create new 'Freeport' business zone could create thousands of new local jobs

The Burnham-On-Sea area could be set to benefit from a bid to develop a new ‘Great Western Freeport’ business zone which aims to generate thousands of new jobs.
The proposals to create a free port zone has been submitted to government and, if accepted, the Great Western Freeport will create a customs area at Royal Portbury and Avonmouth Docks near Bristol where products can be shipped in without paying a tariff plus new tax sites at the Gravity Campus at M5 Junction 23 near Burnham-On-Sea (pictured) and Severnside.
The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) is leading the bid after the Government announced plans to create 10 free ports across the UK using £200m in seed funding. ....
