Having healthy ecosystems and mechanisms to protect and sustainably utilise biological assets to address current and future human health crises is in ASEAN’s best interest, according to ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) Executive Director Dr Theresa Mundita S Lim.
In a statement issued in conjunction with World Zoonoses Day, observed on July 6, the executive director said, “Since March 11, 2020, the day COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the world as we know it has never been the same.”
“The virus that reportedly originated from wildlife, continues to have profound impacts on everyone in the world, including the ASEAN region. More than 4.9 million cases with more than 95,000 fatalities have been reported in the region as of July 2, according to the situation report of the ASEAN Bio-Diaspora Regional Virtual Centre.” ....

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin underlined that “the call for greater understanding and tolerance continues to contribute to the building of a strong foundation of shared responsibility and solidarity, a caring and sharing community”.
He made these comments in his welcoming remarks at the ASEAN High-Level Cultural Forum on Promoting an Adaptive ASEAN Community of Greater Understanding, Tolerance and a Sense of Regional Agendas Among the Peoples of ASEAN on Thursday.

A new phase was recently launched for European Union’s (EU) Support to Higher Education in the ASEAN Region (SHARE) programme.
The new phase will support 300 students for one semester of intra-ASEAN physical mobility before the end of 2022, as well as the harmonisation of ASEAN higher education institutions and the formulation of ASEAN high education frameworks.
A joint press release stated that in doing so, ASEAN and the EU will share experience, including the EU’s Erasmus scheme. The EU has allocated EUR5 million for this purpose, and the support will build on the previous successful SHARE programme, which ran since 2015. ....

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is visiting Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam this week to forge closer trade and security ties with the two countries while tackling key global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and the coup in Myanmar.
It is Raab’s fourth visit to Southeast Asia as Foreign Secretary – and first since the publication of the Integrated Review – setting out the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific. Later this year, the United Kingdom’s (UK) Carrier Strike Group led by the HMS Queen Elizabeth, will make its maiden visit to the region.
