Beyond Silicon: Quartz Breaks through to New Capabilities in MEMS Inertial

New frontiers have opened up for line-of-sight communication, targeting, autonomous navigation, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and more, with the astonishing advances in inertial technology. Quartz micro-electromechanical (MEMS) inertial sensors use a one-piece, micromachined inertial sensing element to measure angular rotational velocity. Fundamentally, these sensors produce signal output proportional to the rate of rotation sensed.
A free webinar on July 21 explores the advantages of this technology, and those of closed-loop fiber optic gyros (FOGs):  “Resetting the Bar on Inertial Sensor SWaP for Tactical and Navigation Applications.”
Quartz MEMS have crashed past previous SWaP-c barriers in line-of-sight communication and targeting and autonomous navigation, where the key parameters are angle random walk (ARW) for gyros and velocity random walk (VRW) for accelerometers. They serve as the heart of a new generation of system solutions and offer ....

Butterfly sensor is a breakthrough in bomb detection

The butterfly sensor can detect the smallest amounts of explosives
Butterfly sensor is a breakthrough in bomb detection
Researchers at General Electric Global Research have come with a so-called butterfly sensor that will help improve the technology used to detect explosive materials and weaponry, such as bombs. Nowadays, the technology used to detect this kind of dangerous weaponry that is usually involved in terrorist attacks is bulky, expensive and hard to use, which is why GE Global Research has been working on making a breakthrough in the field of bomb-detection. The butterfly sensor doesn’t really resemble a butterfly, but it does draw some of its components from the Morpho butterfly. ....

ALBANY – A businessman from China has been indicted on one charge of conspiring to steal trade secrets from General Electric, federal prosecutors said.
Chi Lung Winsman Ng, also known as Winsman Ng, 64, of China, has yet to be arrested, officials said. If convicted, he would face up to 10 years in federal prison.
Ng is accused of conspiring with a person employed at the General Electric Global Research Center in Niskayuna from March 2017 to January 2018 to take proprietary information concerning GE-developed technology related to MOSFETs, a device that regulates the flow of electricity through devices that are used in a variety of products. ....
