AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A Maine lawmaker has proposed the creation of a new program designed to help more recent graduates remain in the state.
Maine has one of the oldest populations in the country, and state leaders have identified a need to retain younger residents. Democratic Rep. Morgan Rielly of Westbrook has proposed legislation to create a program called the “Maine Service Fellows Program” that would address that.
Rielly said the program would allow its fellows to work in rural communities. Rielly said the communities “have proposed recovery project plans to address local needs, including, but not limited to, projects focused on the economic fallout and ongoing issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.” ....

Letter: Local officials stand up for your zoning rights

Letter: Local officials stand up for your zoning rights

To the Editors:
Last week, the Planning and Development Committee advanced two bills that would completely upend the ability of Shelton and other towns to manage their local zoning. Unsurprisingly, it was decided along party lines with all 17 Democrats on the committee voting in favor of removing public input and accountability from town land use and development decisions.
I applaud the Shelton Board of Aldermen and Shelton P&Z Chair Virginia Harger for speaking out against these bills. Allowing Hartford to mismanage local zoning the same way they have mismanaged the state s finances would only end in disaster. As a legislature, we should reject any proposals that would take these decisions away from voters and put them in the hands of unelected Hartford bureaucrats. ....

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Gov. Andy Beshear offered an incentive Monday for accelerating the pace for COVID-19 vaccinations, saying he will lift capacity restrictions at most venues and businesses once 2.5 million Kentuckians have received at least their first shot.
The Democratic governor s announcement came on the opening day of a massive vaccination site at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. The goal is to vaccine 200,000 Kentuckians at the drive-through location in the next seven weeks, he said.
More than 1.5 million Kentuckians have received at least their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, but the governor has stressed that many vaccination sites have available openings. He set the threshold for ending capacity restrictions at most businesses and venues as an enticement to pick up the pace. ....
