Senators get earful about education

WATERLOO â Northeast Indianaâs state senators heard concerns about school vouchers and career education at a public forum Saturday morning in the DeKalb High School auditorium.
Sens. Sue Glick, R-LaGrange, and Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, differed in their responses to opponents of proposed expansion of private-school vouchers.
Both senators responded sympathetically to fears that funding might be cut to four programs at Impact Institute at Kendallville and similar career and technical education centers.
Approximately 50 people attended the two-hour forum sponsored by the DeKalb Chamber Partnership. Staff members for U.S. Rep. Jim Banks and U.S. Sen. Mike Braun also spoke. ....

Library buys new van

AUBURN â As a library patron, Dorotha B. âDorothyâ Schrader relied on Eckhart Public Libraryâs delivery services.
Now, her legacy gift to the library will help continue and improve those services, with the purchase of a new van that made its first deliveries Friday.
Deliveries have become even more important during the pandemic, and they are available weekly to any library patron.
Schrader, who died Nov. 28, 2016, at the age of 89, left the library as the main beneficiary of her will.
The library used part of her gift to complete its renovation and restoration following a 2017 arson fire. The balance of her bequest will grow in an endowment for books, maintenance and emergencies. ....

Library eliminates overdue fines

AUBURN â The Eckhart Public Library Board of Trustees unanimously voted to do away with overdue fines for items checked out from the library, and it affirmed its commitment to offering robust curbside and delivery services, at the boardâs regular meeting Tuesday evening.
The moves are part of the libraryâs goal to âbreak down barriers to access,â as outlined in the Eckhart Public Library 2019-2021 strategic plan, approved by the board of trustees in December 2018.
The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown into sharp relief the ways that the library can improve service to the community â and how to make it easier for people to use all the resources the library has to offer, said a news release from the library. ....

Seven historic buildings restored and with new uses, plus a compatible new building adding to commercial and residential space overlooking a revived streetscape sums up the new life for Fort Wayne’s historic The Landing. ARCH recognizes the success and impact of this project with a Preservation Partnership Award this year. ....
