The U.S. Embassy and consulates continue to monitor closely COVID-19 conditions in Japan. Case numbers continue to rise throughout the country. Several areas, including Tokyo, are posting record or near-record numbers daily. Prefectural and local governments indicate that healthcare capacity, including critical care bed space and medical personnel staffing, is becoming strained. On December 17, Tokyo Governor Koike raised Tokyo’s health care alert system to its highest level for the first time since ending the state of emergency in May, indicating that the government task force believes hospitals could soon be overwhelmed. According to press reports, the Tokyo government is concerned that as many as 80 percent of the city’s hospitals and clinics will close during the New Year period, which will further constrain health care capacity. ....

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – A presentation “Belarus-Japan: A policy towards deeper economic and humanitarian interaction between the countries” took place in Tokyo on 18 December, representatives of the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Japan told BelTA.
The event was organized by the Embassy of Belarus in Japan in association with the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Belarus-Japan Business Club. It was the first major bilateral event held amid the pandemic and involving over 40 representatives of the Japanese private sector. Members of the Japanese parliament, representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and some business associations attended the presentation. ....

 It is unusual that the new Japanese Ambassador to China, Hideo Tarumi, chose to accept his first interview by a Chinese media outlet, the Global Times, after he took office. Since I worked in the media industry in 2014 there have been three Japanese ambassadors to China in succession, but Tarumi is the only one willing to be interviewed by the Global Times. ....
