Jefferson County man charged federally with aiming laser beam at Star 1 helicopter Updated Jan 27, 2021; A Jefferson County man has been charged federally after authorities say he aimed a laser at a helicopter last year. The grand jury issued the indictment against 26-year-old Gabriel Lopez Mathews, according to a statement issued Wednesday by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp Jr. The incident happened on April 11, 2020, but details of the incident weren’t made available.
