(Paoli, Ind.) - Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch today joined Indiana electric cooperative leaders and community and industry partners from southern Indiana to discuss broadband initiatives. The group discussed the impact cooperatives have on closing the rural digital divide, the different ways cooperatives are working to provide this essential service and the stories of how it s impacting their communities. 
 
It s more evident now than ever how fast, reliable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for modern life, Crouch said. Several Indiana cooperatives are taking significant steps to advance the availability of affordable and reliable high-speed internet in their communities, and I m thrilled to hear the stories about how it s improving the quality of life of Hoosiers.”  ....

Jackson County Senior Centers not open yet, but hope to soon


Scottsboro Senior Center has long been a place where senior citizens can socialize and enjoy activities. When COVID-19 began to make its way stateside, senior citizens were immediately placed near the top in vulnerability and measures needed to be taken to ensure their safety.
While Gov. Kay Ivey’s Safer Apart order allows for senior centers across Alabama to re-open beginning Monday, April 19, the seven senior centers in Jackson County will remain closed for the time being.
In a press release, Jackson County Nutrition Coordinator Linda Larcom of the Jackson County Council on Aging cited that while senior centers are allowed to re-open, the guidelines for re-opening “are so restrictive” that Jackson County Senior Centers decided to remain closed for the time being. ....

The Jackson County Public Library board of trustees elected 2021 officers during a meeting Dec. 21 via Zoom.
Those taking office in January are President Dan Davis, Vice President Kathy Ellis, Secretary Angie Keasler, Assistant Secretary Sally Crouch and Treasurer Mary Reed.
The board also approved payment of claims on hand through the end of the year and a 2021 salary resolution.
Don Myers Jr. was reappointed to the board by the Jackson County Council for his first full four-year term. He will take his oath of office in January. He has served the last two years finishing Charlie Murphy’s four-year appointment that expires Dec. 31. ....

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has secured funding from the Jackson County Council through the CARES Act to buy new body cameras and data storage.
The sheriff’s department will be receiving 30 Pro-Vision body cameras for $549 each, totaling $16,470 overall. This cost includes docking stations used to charge the cameras and upload data from them.
County police also are getting a new cloud-based storage system. The system is being purchased on a five-year plan to store 2 to 10 terabytes of data. It’s being purchased for a maximum cost of $89,540 for 10 terabytes, but the sheriff’s department agreed to work on keeping the costs of the plan down if able. ....
