“I don’t care what neighborhood, I don’t care what financial background, education, it doesn’t discriminate one bit,” said Jacksonville Fire And Rescue Department spokesperson Eric Prosswimmer. “It’s a daily event. Some stations they say that’s all they go on.”
Prosswimmer said overdoses were once considered a “big call” because they did not happen every day, but that’s no longer the case. Prosswimmer said first responders prepare for almost all calls to be overdoses.
Data from JFRD shows opioid-related overdoses rose from 16 incidents in January 2015 to 336 in May 2021. That’s a 2,000% increase. ....

Jacksonville remembers Lieutenant Jimmy Lee Walls
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Members of the community gathered Saturday to honor the life of a retired lieutenant with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Jimmy Lee Walls died May 29.
His funeral was held Saturday, to remember his 25 years of service.
Walls was born in Alabama and lived in New York, but his family said he made Jacksonville home, too.
On March 11, 1988, Walls began his career with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. It was a job that made sense for a man who cared about everyone, his daughters said. ....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville firefighters saved a 27-year-old man in a dramatic rescue Saturday evening in the St. Johns River, hoisting him out of the water after his car fell over the Dames Point Bridge.
Photos from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department show a captain harnessing the man and as crews on the bridge pulled him to safety. The driver had gotten out of his car, which was underwater. He was taken to the hospital, but amazingly only had minor injuries after the 35-foot fall in his vehicle. ....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Need a smile?
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Jacksonville Fire And Rescue Department surprised a local 3-year-old for his birthday on Sunday.
First responders surprised little David with a car parade, presents and more.
Fire stations 30, 50 and 29 flashed their lights and waved to David as they passed.
