SPRINGFIELD With the man who murdered her father nearly 30 years ago back behind bars, the world feels right again.
John Stote, convicted in 1997 in the brutal stabbing death of Springfield bar owner John “Jackie” Regan three years earlier, received a rare medical parole in late January from the commissioner of the state Department of Corrections. Stote, 61, had contracted COVID-19 and was on a ventilator. ....

‘It’s gut-wrenching’: Edgar Bowser, man who killed Shrewsbury Police Officer James Lonchiadis in 1975, granted medical parole

In 1975, Edgar Bowser, armed with a .32 caliber handgun, shot and killed 28-year-old Shrewsbury Police Officer James Lonchiadis. Forty-six years later, Bowser has been granted medical parole.
The 62-year-old inmate has spent much of the past five decades behind bars but is now being granted medical parole after a decision was issued by Massachusetts Department of Correction Commissioner Carol Mici, sources told MassLive.
Bowser, an inmate at Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater, has been diagnosed with metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a rare cancer that originates in the upper part of the throat. The cancer has spread to his bones, and he remains unresponsive, which is why he was granted medical parole in the first place, according to Bowser’s Somerville-based attorney, Rebecca Rose. ....

SPRINGFIELD While prisoners’ rights activists applauded the release of murderer John Stote on medical parole, some local elected officials are seething.
Stote, 61, received a rare medical parole on Jan. 21 after contracting COVID-19 at Norfolk state prison. He was there serving out a life sentence without the possibility parole for the brutal murder of John “Jackie” Regan in 1995. The men argued over a debt after Regan agreed to sell him his then-popular bar, Carregan’s Lounge. ....

A former used car salesman, cocaine dealer and fraudster, Stote was in 1997 convicted of the brutal murder of John “Jackie” Regan, a restaurant owner who got in a dispute with Stote over the sale of a bar. By his own admission, Stote stabbed Regan many times, then wrapped him in a set of green sheets. He weighted Regan’s body with dumbbells and dumped it in the Connecticut River on his way to a wedding on Cape Cod. Regan remained missing for months until two canoeists found his body in a marshy area near South Windsor. ....
