Artwork embodying 'deeply social nature of humans' wins painting prize | Richmond and Twickenham Times


An artwork which “embodies the deeply social nature of humans” has won a contemporary painting prize after judging took place online due to coronavirus restrictions.
The Common by Kathryn Maple was announced as the winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2020 by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool on Thursday.
The work shows people “sharing an open space” and is based on ideas around resting places within a city.

Judging took place in November last year – after Liverpool was put under the highest level of coronavirus restrictions – so for the first time in the prize’s history the works were judged entirely online, with high-spec cameras, screens, speakers and software used to allow judges to appreciate their scale, texture and detail. ....

Oxfordshire artist shortlisted for prize won by David Hockney


A TALENTED Oxfordshire artist’s painting has been shortlisted for a prestigious art prize once won by David Hockney.
Stephen Lee, who lives in Brailes on the Oxfordshire-Warwickshire border, is in the running for the John Moores Painting Prize 2020 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
Mr Lee s shortlisted painting is called March , and draws from the sprawling landscapes of the Cotswolds which he frequents.
The paint and ash on canvas depicts a labourer and his dog surrounded by tools, with a picturesque view of the Cotswolds in the background.
Mr Lee, a former fine art teacher in Oxford, said the combination of paint and ash creates a unique “burnished, stained and glazed” image. ....

Damien Hirst Gagosian Gallery Takeover - John Moores Painting Prize


 
The Walker Art Gallery has announced the five paintings shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize 2020.  
 The shortlisted works are among the 67 paintings to be exhibited in the John Moores Painting Prize 2020, at the Walker from 12 February to 27 June 2021. A virtual tour of the exhibition will launch on 12 February until the gallery can open. 
 The five shortlisted artists, awarded £2,500, are: The Neanderthal Futures Infirmary by Robbie Bushe, Compost by Michele Fletcher, The Motherland by Steph Goodger, March by Stephen Lee and The Common by Kathryn Maple. 
 The first prize winner will be announced on 4 March, when the winning artist will not only receive the £25,000 first prize, but also the honour of joining an esteemed list of British painters who have won the Prize over the past 63 years. The winning painting will be acquired by the Walker Art Gallery and join its world-class collection, while the artist will also have a future solo displa ....
