Today In Johnson City History: May 12


The Whig was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1841.
May 12, 1887: The Comet reported, “On the 21st of May, 1887, an excursion to Cranberry over the E.T. & W.N.C. R.R. under the management of Mr. S.H. Pouder for the benefit of the Y.M.C.A. of Johnson City. The occasion will no doubt be a pleasant trip out and out, and we hope everybody will go. Round trip tickets sold at half rates.” There was no mention of the price of the tickets, nor when the train would leave or return.
The Comet was Johnson City’s first newspaper. ....

April 25, 1872: The Herald and Tribune alerted readers, “Charlie Harrison and Joseph Dickerson were committed to jail last week. They were charged with stealing salt.”
The newspaper also reported, “Lem. Wilder was also committed to jail on Monday night. He was tried before Squire Meek, and the circumstantial evidence was so strong that he was bound over in court, a bail of $2,000 being required. He is charged with robbing the shoe-shop of Carr & Seaver at Johnson City, a short time since.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1872.

April 21, 1841: The Whig reported on two stray mules. “Taken up by Thomas J. Cox, of this county, five miles south of Jonesboro, two Mules (sic), one about 12 hands high, and the other near 14 hands – both dark browne (sic) – valued by George Reed and Calvin Howe, both to be worth fifty dollars.”
“The owner is requested to come forward prove this property – pay costs – or they will be disposed of as the law directs.”
The Whig was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was also spelled as Jonesboro at the time.
