July 29, 1840: The Whig reported the following as a âMedical Notice.â âDr. Patton has resumed the practice of medicine at Kingsport, Tennessee, and respectfully tenders his professional services, to his old friends and the public in general.â
âHe is associated with Dr. Wm. N. Vance, a graduate of one of the Philadelphia Colleges of Medicine. By prompt and diligent attention to the health of their patients, they hope to merit the confidence and patronage of the community.â
The Whig was published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1840.
July 29, 1896: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, according to the Herald and Tribune, âThe Jonesboro Concert company of this place, which is spoken of in the most flattering terms by those who attended the concert given by it in Johnson City the 21st, will give a concert in Greeneville Thursday, August 6. We hope for them a good crowd, and feel sure all who attend will have no chance to regret
July 26, 1843: The Jonesborough Whig and Independent Journal advised readers that âDr. J.F. Cowan respectfully tenders his services to the citizens of Leesburg and vicinity, in the various departments of his profession. Residence at his Motherâs Farm, two miles South West of Leesburg.â
Jonesborough was spelled that way in 1843. Leesburg is a community in rural Washington County.
July 26, 1884: According to The Comet, âProf. E.E. Barnard of Nashville discovered a new comet on the night of the 16th.â
July 26, 1888: The Comet opined, âIf you are blessed with an education, or if you are regretting the fact that you are not, go out to the polls Monday and vote âFor Tax For School Purposes.â â
July 25, 1852: The New Orleans Weekly Delta reported, âThe Jonesborough (Tenn.) Rail Road Journal relates the following as a specimen of the way they do things in Tennessee. âS. D. Adams has written a letter to Col. Roper, of Dandridge, Tennessee, notifying him that he will shortly publish his life, which will be illustrated with woodcuts, and will disgrace him and his children to the tenth generation.â Col. Roper, in reply, says he will prove his calumnies to be false in every material part, and his reputation to be that of a common street liar, and further, that if he shall come in contact with him, he âwill cowhide him in a manner commensurate with the spirit of his age. Cowhiding in accordance with the age is good!ââ
July 23, 1874: The Herald and Tribune extended a sad invitation: âThe funeral services of Mrs. McNeal will be conducted by Rev. J.L. Mann at Johnson City, August 9th. The friends of deceased are invited to be present.â
