Jonesborough was spelled in that way in 1857.

July 23, 1874: The Herald and Tribune extended a sad invitation: “The funeral services of Mrs. McNeal will be conducted by Rev. J.L. Mann at Johnson City, August 9th. The friends of deceased are invited to be present.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was also spelled as Jonesboro within the pages of the newspaper.
July 23, 1891: The Comet quipped, “A party of young men went out picnicking yesterday in the direction of Buffalo mountain (sic). It was their purpose to spend the day on the mountain, and they did.”

July 20, 1896: One hundred and fifteen years ago today, The Journal and Tribune reported, “Mr. J.T. Burch, of the Nashville American, was in the city yesterday en route to Johnson City, where he will join Gov. Taylor.”
The Journal and Tribune was a newspaper published in Knoxville. It ceased publication in 1924. The Nashville American was published in Nashville from 1894 until 1910. There was not a daily newspaper published in Johnson City in 1896. The Comet was a weekly publication.
July 20, 1911: The Comet reported, “A meeting of the board of mayor and aldermen was held on Monday afternoon, for the purpose of considering the issuance of paving bonds and the fixing of interest. July 18, 1889: The Comet reported several interesting pieces of information about Johnson City area residents.
“Mr. Ed Lynn is the new Secretary and Treasurer at the Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works.”
“Mrs. Sam Simons and daughter, Lottie May, have returned from Cranberry. The child is improved in health.”
“Gen. Wilder yesterday deeded the lot on which the new Baptist Church is built at Roan Mountain, and then gave ten dollars in cash.”
“Mayor Ike T. Jobe calls the board together every few nights now and is settling down to work nicely. He presides with dignity and keeps both eyes open for Johnson City interests.” ....

July 15, 1896: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Morristown Gazette ran an advertisement from Tate L. Earnest, a businessman in Johnson City. The advertisement said, “Money to loan on long time and easy payments. No delay. Secured by first mortgage in good real estate. For particulars address Tate L Earnest, Johnson City, Tenn.”
The Morristown Gazette was published from 1867 until 1920. There were no daily newspapers published in Johnson City in 1896. The Comet was a weekly publication.
July 15, 1918: The Johnson City Daily Staff brought news of several sick or injured area residents.
“James Farnsworth, 8, ill with typhoid fever was removed from his home on Baxter street (sic) yesterday afternoon to Memorial Hospital for treatment.” ....
