Johnson City Schools eases mask requirements

Although they will be required to continue wearing face coverings in common areas, Johnson City students in grades K-4 will now be allowed to remove their masks while at their desks.
The Johnson City Board of Education approved changes to the systemâs COVID-19 protocols on Monday, which included laxer policies on masking but also continuations of existing guidelines.
Safety Supervisor Greg Wallace noted that itâs much easier to contact trace students in grades K-4 because students stay in a consistent classroom cohort throughout the day. As students move beyond elementary school, it gets harder to track potential contacts, he said. ....

Johnson City school board approves 1% raise for employees

The Johnson City Board of Education approved Monday a 1% raise for all employees for the 2020-21 school year using a $330,500 allocation from the state.
The total cost of the raise will be about $550,000, meaning $220,000 will be picked up from the systemâs general fund.
The raises will apply in the current school year with the system receiving its allocation from the state in five installments through the remainder of the academic year. The stateâs allocation must be used for teachers and other instructional certified staff, including nurses.
Board Chair Kathy Hall said before the meeting Monday that the body works to ensure the systemâs teachers receive among the best pay in the state. Board members have also traditionally been supportive of making sure all employees get the same raise as teachers. ....
