Photo: WINA From Virginiasports.com: SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse Orange (1-1, 1-0 ACC) outscored UVA in the second half, 11-3, to hand the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (3-1, 0-1 ACC) their first defeat of the year on Saturday night, 20-10, inside the Carrier Dome. After UVA trailed early, 2-0, the Cavaliers went on a 5-1 run to stake themselves to a 5-3 lead in the first quarter. The Orange put a goal in right before the end of the first frame, starting a 7-2 Syracuse run that started the game’s separation. HOW IT HAPPENED

Photo by Larry French/NCAA Photos via Getty Images The Virginia Men’s Lacrosse team kicks off the 2021 season this afternoon as the Hoos host Towson at 4pm in a tilt that will be broadcast by the ACC Network. This is the 92nd season in program history, and it has been a long 335 days between games thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Virginia played just six games last season, going 4-2 overall. Michael Kraus is the biggest loss for the Hoos coming into this season as the fourth year graduated and was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2020 MLL Draft. Kraus scored 14 goals and dished 12 assists last season and finished his career with 131 goals (No. 7 in UVA history), 109 assists (No. 6), and 240 points (tied-No. 4).

It features 14 games spanning the next 13 weeks, and boasts eight games against teams ranked in the preseason USILA Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers, who won the NCAA tournament in 2019, enter the season ranked No. 5. The Hoos played just six games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 4-2. They return key pieces at each position group, including All Americans Dox Aitken and Jared Conners. As mentioned, Virginia opens at Towson at 4pm on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network. It’s the first time since 2013 that Virginia has opened against a team other than Loyola, although fans only have to wait two weeks to see the Greyhounds as the Hoos will play their second game of the season in Baltimore at 5pm on February 20.

Yet it isn’t quite as old as some other routine contenders. Virginia made its one graduate transfer addition count, picking up former Merrimack star Charlie Bertrand. But just two of last year’s seniors opted to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility, long pole Jared Conners and midfielder Dox Aitken, who took a rollercoaster path back to Charlottesville after a brief stint as a Division I football player at Villanova. If it felt like at the time Virginia had arrived — or, more accurately, returned — a year early in 2019, in retrospect, it’s fortuitous the Cavaliers claimed that title when they could. Or perhaps that very climb to the top made it easier for those seniors to call it a college career. Either way, Tiffany won’t have Michael Kraus and others to lean on while trying to strengthen the team’s culture.

It’s everybody’s headline, but you’ll hear it conveniently used by losers, those that came up short. On gameday, you have all you need. Adapt. Be flexible. Overcome. Enjoy. A trio of games will be televised this weekend — 3 p.m. Friday, Denver at Duke; 4 p.m. Saturday, Towson at Virginia; and 11 a.m. Sunday, Denver at North Carolina. Networks should be ACC Network Friday and Saturday and ESPNU for Sunday. Schedules are apt to change and shift, so be cognizant.

In the many southern states, the high school lacrosse season is a month away or sooner, especially this year. The Florida High School Athletic Association is currently set to get play underway on February 15th with the state finals set for May 7-8 in Kissimmee. With the high school season just right around the corner, here are a few superlatives from around the Sunshine State heading into the 2021 spring season: Team Most Likely to Win a State Title: Ponte Vedra finally reached the promised land in 2019, winning their first state title and becoming the first public school to do so. During the shortened 2020 season, the Sharks went 6-2, falling only to MIAA members Gilman, 11-9, and Boy’s Latin, 25-6, during their trip to Maryland.
Attack Chris Gray totaled 27 goals and 21 assists in seven games during his first season at North Carolina. He also caused two turnovers and corralled 15 ground balls. Cornell’s Jeff Teat is back for a fifth and final season after putting his National Lacrosse League career on hold. He posted 12 goals and 15 assists in 2020. Princeton transfer Michael Sowers comes to Duke after claiming Princeton’s all-time points crown (302). He led Division I with 9.40 points per game and 6.2 assists per game. Midfield The top midfielder on arguably the best midfield, Brendan Curry anchors Syracuse. In five games, Curry notched 14 goals and five assists while also shooting 36.8 percent.
