ATLANTA – Transportation planners may be able to use legislation the General Assembly passed recently originally aimed at freight rail to make more room for large cargo ships calling at the Port of Savannah.
A bill lawmakers approved on the last day of this year’s legislative session authorizes the state to seek private investment to help finance improvements to Georgia’s freight-rail network.
But provisions the state Senate tacked onto a measure that originated in the Georgia House of Representatives add a new dimension.
Besides the freight rail piece, the final version of the bill would give the state Department of Transportation a new method of contracting for major projects the agency could use to raise the Talmadge Bridge to accommodate a new generation of huge containerized-cargo ships calling increasingly at the port’s Garden City Terminal. ....

Sitting behind the desk of his tiny office in downtown Dawsonville on a morning in early December, Rep. Kevin Tanner reflected that throughout his time in the general assembly, he was proud to rise above politics and focus on policy.
But after four terms serving Georgia House District 9, which encompasses Dawson and Lumpkin Counties and part of northern Forsyth County, and an unsuccessful bid for Georgia s District 9 Congressional seat, Tanner will step out of the world of politics this January and says he has no plans to return. ....

Pandemic producing record-high truck traffic in Georgia

The coronavirus pandemic is generating all-time high truck traffic on Georgiaâs interstate highways, state Commissioner of Transportation Russell McMurry said Thursday.
Georgians worried about exposure to COVID-19 have switched from shopping at brick-and-mortar stores and restaurant dining to ordering food and retail goods online.
âThereâs a lot of freight being moved because â¦ everything is on your doorstep,â McMurry told members of the State Transportation Board.
After a huge drop in traffic volumes early in the pandemic, overall traffic has recovered to near normal on the interstates and is down only 5% to 10% on state highways, McMurry said. However, there is a difference in commuting patterns in metro Atlanta, he said. ....
