Charges against driver upgraded in N.J. crash that killed 1, injured 2 others

Charges against a Florida, man arrested after a fatal crash in Paterson two years ago have been upgraded by indictment from death-by-auto to first-degree aggravated manslaughter, authorities said Monday.
Alvin Mootoo, 49, of Orlando, was arrested following the Jan. 2, 2019 crash that killed 31-year-old Jorge Alberto Pena Mesa, who was standing near a parked car talking to the driver when he was struck, police said at the time.
The drivers of two other cars were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. ....
