Applying mathematics takes 'friendship paradox' beyond averages

 E-Mail
The friendship paradox is the observation that the degrees of the neighbors of a node within any network will, on average, be greater than the degree of the node itself. In other words: your friends probably have more friends than you do.
While the standard framing of the friendship paradox is essentially about averages, significant variations occur too.
In the
Journal of Complex Networks, Santa Fe Institute and University of Michigan researchers George Cantwell, Alec Kirkley, and Mark Newman address this by developing the mathematical theory of the friendship paradox.
Some people have lots of friends, while others have only a few. Unless you have good reason to believe otherwise, it s reasonable to assume you have roughly an average number of friends. ....

To find the right network model, compare all possible histories

Two family members test positive for COVID-19 how do we know who infected whom? In a perfect world, network science could provide a probable answer to such questions. It could also tell archaeologists how a shard of Greek pottery came to be found in Egypt, or help evolutionary biologists understand how a long-extinct ancestor metabolized proteins.
As the world is, scientists rarely have the historical data they need to see exactly how nodes in a network became connected. But a new paper published in
Physical Review Letters offers hope for reconstructing the missing information, using a new method to evaluate the rules that generate network models. ....

Throwback Thursday: Zinn Jewelry

Throwback Thursday: Zinn Jewelry
Today s installment Throwback Thursday takes us to the unit block on North Main Street on the west side.
In 1888, Henry Zinn was a clerk for Amos Plank, watchmaker and jeweler, at 11 N. Main.  Amos had been there since 1882. In 1890, Henry Zinn decided to go out on his own and had become an optician. He opened his own shop at 9 N. Main.
Zinn was at this location for about 40 years.  In 1929, Zinn partnered with George Cantwell in anticipation of retirement, which he did about 1940.  Richard Meador also worked for the Cantwell s and later had his own jewelry store.  ....
