The winter sports season is different this year, but student-athletes from all around the state still are lacing up and competing. That being the case, we here at 92.9 The Ticket, Maine s Sports Leader, will honor those who excel on the courts, on the ice and on the slopes.

Solar moratorium vote scheduled in Blue Hill

BLUE HILL The town of Blue Hill is holding a special town meeting by secret ballot to decide whether or not to enact a Moratorium Ordinance Regarding Commercial Solar Activities. Voting will be on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at George Stevens Academy.
The ordinance, which is available on the town website, would give Blue Hill six months to amend its Land Use Ordinance to address solar developments.
As a result of the Maine Legislature’s net energy billing legislation, “developers have expressed interest in and aggressively pursued the development of commercial solar facilities throughout the state of Maine, including in the town,” the ordinance states. Furthermore, the town’s existing ordinance “is insufficient to prevent serious public harm that could result from the siting, installation and operation of commercial solar facilities within the town.” ....

ELLSWORTH A lengthy process to register for and schedule COVID-19 vaccinations through Northern Light Health using its online portal left many seniors frustrated last week.
When its online portal reopened on Jan. 25, just getting the webpage to load was an issue. Northern Light has set Monday afternoons, starting at 2 p.m., for scheduling vaccination appointments.
“The demand for vaccine is high and the supply is limited,” Kelley Columber, director of communications for the Blue Hill and Ellsworth hospitals, said on Jan. 26, one day after Northern Light reopened its registration and appointments for the second time. This week, the statewide health-care system added a hotline number for residents who don’t have access to or use the internet. ....

Blue Hill, Deer Isle schools close amid COVID outbreak
BLUE HILL Schools here and in Deer Isle will be holding remote classes this week due to COVID-19 cases among staff and students and, in the case of Deer Isle, a weekend gathering earlier this month where several families came in contact with someone who has now gotten sick.
George Stevens Academy has reported four positive COVID-19 cases among staff and students.
“We’re going remote because we need to have some time for cleaning,” said Head of School Tim Seeley. “There’s four other schools that are going remote this week because of cases.” ....

Maine State Police Log Week of Jan. 21
ELLSWORTH The Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Route 1 in Topsfield Jan. 14 that claimed the life of a Houlton man.
Tyler Dwyer, 30, was deceased at the scene, police said. An unnamed passenger was injured.
Dwyer had been southbound in a 2009 Ford pickup truck, which belongs to Bushwacker and Sons Logging Inc. out of Cary, police said.
Troopers said the truck collided with a northbound 2020 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by Gregory Worster, 58, of Kingman.
The collision occurred in the northbound lane, authorities said. Failure to maintain the proper lane and fatigue appear to be factors in the crash, police said. ....
