Embrace Iowa fund helps young woman with disabilities become financially savvy and meet her goals

Last year 21-year-old Kelsey Schinker moved out of her dad’s house and into a group home for people with intellectual disabilities. This was her first time managing her small monthly allowance, and she accidentally overdrew her checking account.   
Schinker’s banker, Jim Zimmerman at Shelby County State Bank in Harlan, waived the fee since this was Schinker’s first overdraft. He recommended that she review her bank transactions regularly online, but she didn’t have a way to do so. Zimmerman helped her apply for an Embrace Iowa grant so she could buy an iPad and track her finances.  ....
