Rio Tinto is taking over $4 million of taxpayer and council costs for getting rid of tonnes of toxic waste from Tiwai Pt aluminium smelter.

That still leaves uncertainty around a $200m-plus clean-up of more toxic spent cell liner waste. The company has said it will remove it, but not where to.

Government ministers will meet a top Rio Tinto executive this week but are not resuming talks with the company about the Tiwai Pt smelter.

Ministers Grant Robertson and Megan Woods will hold an introductory meeting this Thursday with Vella as part of routine dialogue with business leaders.
A spokesperson said this did not signal a resumption of talks about cleaning up when the smelter closes in 2024.
The government has paused talks with Rio Tinto until it gets a commitment from the global corporate to remediation and what it would actually do to clean up the smelter site in Bluff, they said. ....

Rio Tinto has revealed there is more hazardous waste at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter than previously thought, forcing it to raise the provision for cleaning up the contaminated site.
The added material was picked up in a routine audit, about five months after Finance Minister Grant Robertson wrote to directors of the smelter questioning the basis upon which they were preparing to cover the costs of closure and clean up. ....
