Ursuline Sisters open door for improvement | News, Sports, Jobs

CANFIELD The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown received a $7,785 grant from the J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation to underwrite most of their main motherhouse entrance repair project.
Sister Mary McCormick, general superior of the Ursuline Sisters, said the grant paid to have one of the two sets of doors completely replaced. The sisters made repairs to the other set of doors.
McCormick said in nonpandemic times, approximately 1,500 people visit the Motherhouse campus each month, many through this entrance that includes the Sisters, residents, visitors, and participants in education and wellness programs at the site.
“This gift from the J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation will help ensure the safety of everyone using this main entrance to our Motherhouse. Since we have limited visitors because of COVID-19, we thought it was an excellent time to focus on improvements to our property and equipment. Robinson-Shuba statue dedication delayed | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN A committee has postponed dedication of the Robinson-Shuba Commemorative Statue, originally set for April, because of the continued proliferation of COVID-19.
The Robinson-Shuba Statue Committee expects to decide by mid-May on a new date in late summer.
“We look forward to dedicating the statue in Wean Park when the COVID-19 situation improves,” Ernie Brown, co-chair of the statue committee, said. “So we’re postponing our April 18 event in the best interest of the health and safety of the many we expect will attend. We look forward to setting a new date by mid-May.”
The April 18, 1946, handshake of Jackie Robinson, the first African American allowed to play in mainstream professional baseball, and George Shuba, his white teammate from Youngstown, was a landmark moment in the integration of baseball and, eventually, much of American life. ....

OUTDOOR FUN: The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, will cut the ribbon 3:15 p.m. Monday on its Winter Campus. The campus features a high-quality synthetic ice rink that provides an authentic ice skating experience throughout the season, regardless of weather. The rink will be open through March 28 and will provide free public skating for the community and a curling lane for recreation and competitive play. It also will be available to rent. Snacks and hot chocolate will be available for purchase. The campus offers quality outdoor physical and social activities during the late fall and winter. Major sponsors are Western Reserve Health Foundation, the Youngstown Foundation, and the J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation. Other sponsors are Dom’s Ice House, Acme Steak and Seafood, Real Living Volpini Realty Group, and Penguin City Brewing Co.
