Louisiana State Sen. Rick Ward proposes permanent use of road tax

State Sen. Rick Ward is at the forefront of legislation that could bring additional help to road improvement projects across Louisiana.
Permanent use of the 0.45-cent sales tax lawmakers approved in 2018 to stabilize the budget would create the additional funding for much-needed road improvements, said Ward, R-Port Allen.
Final approval of the bill was pending this week as state lawmakers head to the final stretch of the 2021 Regular Legislature.
One piece of the bill would funnel an additional $100 million to maintenance and repairs.
“Particularly for rural areas I represent, that would be huge because it would allow a lot of much-needed work on small bridges and old roads,” he told The Banner. ....

Resolution asks Congress for money for construction of new bridge

BATON ROUGE – A resolution approved Monday at the State Capitol asks Congress to funnel money from proposed federal infrastructure legislation for construction of a Mississippi River bridge to begin by 2029.
Members of the multi-parish Capitol Area Road and Bridge District request Gov. John Bel Edwards and state lawmakers appropriate and direct the allocation of the funds for the planning, specifications and full funding to bring to fruition the long-desired plans for a bridge that would connect La. 1 along the Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes with La. 30 along the St. Gabriel/Baton Rouge corridor.
The proposed project carries an estimated $1 billion price tag. ....
