Editor, News-Register: I was very much saddened to have learned of the passing of J. Michael Myer, the highly respected executive editor of the historic area newspapers, The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register. His positive impact on the area will be felt for years to come. Mr. Myer’s outstanding career in the newspaper business spanned 46 glorious years, serving initially in the position of reporter, followed by city editor, publisher, editor and most recently in the position of executive editor for the last 23 years. In addition, Mr. Myer’s editorials and weekly columns were always very informative and insightful, and personally he was also well known, and highly respected, for his strong advocacy on behalf of those most in need, and for the betterment of area communities.

Michael Myer, a familiar face throughout West Virginia, and executive editor of the Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, died Wednesday, January 6, at Wheeling Hospital. He was 69. Mike spent several years in the early part of his career as Editor of the Wetzel Chronicle his hometown paper. He had a love for the weekly papers, and was quick to call with a compliment, or offer help when needed. Not once was he ever critical, but instead he chose to offer helpful advice. Myer was currently the president of the trustees of the West Virginia Press Association Foundation, the educational non-profit supported by the state’s newspaper industry.

Michael Myer, longtime executive editor of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, died Wednesday at Wheeling Hospital. He was 69. Myer served as executive editor of both publications for the past 23 years. Prior to that, he was editor of the Wheeling News-Register, a position he assumed in 1991. His 46-year newspaper career included stints as a reporter, weekly newspaper publisher and editor and then editor and executive editor of the daily newspapers. Myer was well-known throughout West Virginia and Ohio for his insightful editorials and columns that focused on local and state issues.
Jim Cochran Marshall County Chamber of Commerce executive director Scott Reager this past week announced special events for 2021. Via Chamber Chatter, the weekly newsletter of the Chamber of Commerce, the dates of seven events which the Chamber will hopefully be able to sponsor were announced. Along with plans for these events, requests were made for members to volunteer to spearhead these attractions. Of course, the key to having the events will be if Gov. Jim Justice changes the numbers of individuals who can gather. Reager hasn’t scheduled any of the events until early April in hopes that the governor will act in favor of the Chamber.
