Electrical engineering professor Dan Smalley and a team of engineering students are making science fiction a reality through their work with particles and lasers. The team has managed to manipulate a single particle and laser beam in a contained volume to produce animated images. The group of researchers use the movement of the particle illuminated by the laser beam to create scenes found in sci-fi films, like Star Trek laser beams and Star Wars lightsabers. They even created a stick figure man that walked on a student’s finger. ....

Brigham Young University was recognized by the National Science Foundation for preparing more future Ph.D. students in foreign languages and business management than any other American college. Data shared by the foundation also shows that BYU graduates have greater success earning doctorates in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, psychology, education research and other fields of study. Over the past 10 years, 241 BYU alumni completed a Ph.D. in business management and administration. This was 250% more than their closest competitor, the University of Pennsylvania, whose alumni produced 95 Ph.D.s in the same time period. As for foreign languages, BYU is unusually bilingual. Kevin J Worthen began serving as the 13th president of Brigham Young University on May 1, 2014. He previously served as BYU s advancement vice president and as the dean of its J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he was the Hugh W. Colton Professor of Law. President Worthen currently serves as an area seventy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President and Sister Worthen have three children and six grandchildren.
President Worthen was born in Dragerton (now East Carbon-Sunnyside), Utah, and grew up in nearby Price. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Monterrey, Mexico, he earned an associate degree from the College of Eastern Utah (now USU Eastern). He then received his Bachelor of Arts in political science and his Juris Doctor from BYU. Following his graduation from the J. Reuben Clark Law School, President Worthen served as a law cl ....
