Aderonke Mordi says she knew there were great blue heron nests in the trees on the land she had agreed to buy in order to build a development in Rochester Township.
Mordi, president of International Properties, LLC, testified in Olmsted County District Court on Friday, the second day of court proceedings on whether a temporary restraining order barring work on that land should remain in place. ....

Controversial goose control project report shows more untouched nests, fewer volunteers than planned

Among the listed volunteers was Greg Munson, who later denounced the practice of oiling eggs to limit development. The neighbor of Silver Lake Park said he feels the practice is inhumane and suggested the volunteers replace eggs with ceramic substitutes instead of treating them.
Widman said other members of Silver Lake Friends opted not to participate after concerns were raised, but volunteers who helped the effort voiced a desire to return.
Replacement and oiling are options supported by the Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
During the first day of volunteer addling, Munson and approximately 25 protesters voiced a variety of objections at Silver Lake Park, with some opposed to the oiling option and others objecting to any management effort that would reduce the number of goslings in city parks. ....

City takes a gander at control of goose population, sparking web of controversy

MINNEAPOLIS — Too many geese and too much poop are stirring up controversy in Rochester these days over how best to control the city s beloved goose population.
The town has long embraced the flocks of resident Canada geese that wander its riverfront and parks long after the migratory geese wing out of town. But an overabundance of goose feces that slicks up trails, dirties playgrounds and beaches and contaminates water prompted city officials to take action this spring to reduce the number of goslings that will hatch.
Over the past two weeks, a private company hired by the city and a group of recruited volunteers have roamed four local parks searching for goose eggs to slather in corn oil, which cuts off the oxygen supply needed for a gosling to develop. ....

Volunteers find fewer goose nests around Cascade Lake

The search for nests was the second outing for a group of volunteers seeking to help manage the goose population by limiting the number of eggs that hatch.
The Zumbro Valley Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count conducted by the Zumbro Valley Audubon Society found 5,405 geese in Rochester last year, up from 4,244 the year before, but down from an eight-year high of 9,884 in 2017.
Egg addling involves any process that prevents the eggs from developing, and volunteers are using an oiling process.
After using a float test to ensure eggs haven’t reached the 14th day of incubation, volunteers dip them into corn oil and return them to their nests. They will return in three weeks to remove the eggs after the nesting season passes. ....
